Chapter Seventeen
F for Fuck Off
Olivia
After a near traumatizing week that included near-violent mood swings and painful cramps, itâs really starting to sink in that life as I knew it is over. Who knew that the side effects of getting off birth control would be a clearer sign than choking on a cock that wasnât my husbandâs?
Ex-husband, I remind myself. Olivia Daley is dead in all the ways that matter. Iâll never be her again, and sheâs the one who married that human bucket of bullshit.
I can see Cy staring at me again, but for once, itâs not making me uneasy. Itâs the opposite. While his attention is still something that overwhelms me sometimes, I finally feel seen. Heâs looking at me like Iâm a person, not a pawn or someone in his way. âIâm fine,â I say gently. âIâm a little embarrassed that Iâve cried so much in the last few days, but I think thatâs over. Iâm not gonna freak out on you.â
He nods, expression still cautious like he doesnât want to say the wrong thing. âIs there something you want to talk about? I canât imagine any of this has been easy to adjust to.â
Taking a deep breath, I shake my head. âNothing I havenât already said. I wasnât happy in my life before, so what did I really lose? Yeah, itâs weird I have to throw away my toilet paper instead of flush it and some days Iâm so bored I want to scream, but Iâm fine.â
âYou screamed just fine last week,â he teases, a grin on his face. âI know this place is boring, but youâre doing great at that Pokémon game.â
âMmm, no. What kind of psycho wants me to win a one-on-one battle with a fucking Magikarp? All it does is splash!â I groan. âI gave up.â
Cyprus chuckles, pulling a shirt over his head easier than he has been the last week. Itâs a slow recovery process, but I can see him getting better every day. Or maybe heâs just getting better at hiding it. âI have a Switch too if you want me to kick your ass in Mario Kart.â
âIâd like to see you try. I spent a lot of time on the Rainbow Road as a kid.â Itâs true, but I have no doubt heâll beat me without batting an eye. Itâs been years for me and I was never very good. âBring it on.â
âMmhmm.â He moves over to the couch and plops down, making my stomach twist. Iâm too competitive to say no, but Iâm also a little bit of a sore loser.
This is a no-win scenario.
Sighing, I join him and grab a controller. âShould we make bets?â
Why do I do this to myself?
âHell yeah, we should. Whatâs your bet? I already know mine.â
Heâs smiling like he knows heâs about to kick my ass, so I shoot for the stars. âIf I win, you have to sleep on the couch and Iâll sleep in your bed.â
Cy snorts. âYeah, alright. You can even keep all my pillows.
